The Nembe-British war was in 1895, most times recorded by most historians as the ‘’Akassa Raid’’ was the most significant event of the Nembe people, now Brass and Nembe LGA’s of Bayelsa state. The cause of the war was nothing but the trade monopoly given to the Royal Niger Company by the British Government under the Royal Charter in 1886. The Royal Niger Company went as far as molest, maim, kill and seize all Nembe trading canoes at the Niger Delta Coast along the Brass (Nembe) Kingdom.
Under that condition, late King William Koko and the Kings and Chiefs in all the component towns in the Brass/Nembe nation, successfully launched a dawn attack of more than a thousand warriors on the company’s headquarters at Akassa on the fateful morning of January 29th 1895 with no European casualties, which triggered a retaliatory raid in which the British destroyed the town of Brass and slaughtered an estimated four thousand people.
Late King Koko became the originator of the struggle for resource control and victim of external oppression of the white man, thus as a mark of respect and for historical purposes, the ancient Nembe Kingdom had set aside 29th January of every year in remembrance of that courage and statesmanship exhibited by the late King Koko and other Kings and Chiefs who planned and executed that historic war of liberating the Nembe-Brass people from foreign economic and political victimization.
Graves of British soldiers who died in this historical war can still be seen today at the Twon-Brass
